When the World Changed, So Did I
The great coach Marshall Goldsmith said, “You change to fit the times.” I couldn’t agree more.
The future is upon us now and always evolving. The larger question is, are we?
Looking back, once COVID hit and we locked down, I had 24 hrs. to transform my business from in-person, individual coaching to fully virtual meetings. On top of that, several clients contacted me to say that all coaching was suspended until further notice. Wasn’t that a fun day!
Without thinking about the efficacy of their demand, I contacted their respective superiors and explained, as calmly as I could, that if they thought the coaching I provided was important pre-COVID, it would be indispensable now, especially during a lockdown. Miraculously, each client agreed.
Certainly, that was transformation number one.
Transformation number two, interestingly and most importantly, was the development traction my clients gained from our virtual work during COVID. We got closer. We shared more intimately. More fears came out in the sanctity of the virtual meeting.
I must say, I didn’t realize this until now. I didn’t realize the incredible fulfillment I experienced by sharing a client’s life with them during this impossible, scary time. I was there for them, and they were there for me.
My dear clients made me feel, whether they realized it or not, that we both were making a difference for each other. In some unique way, we made each other whole.
Currently, a larger percentage of my practice is one-on-one from this world-shattering event, which I don’t mind at all. In fact, I’m more fulfilled by the intimacy I fostered during COVID, now applying it in person.
The bottom line is that a solution always shows up when you let it.
